One of the best things about Richmond, Virginia, and there are many, is that there’s something for everyone. There are lots of historical attractions to explore, as well as great restaurants. Once you’ve checked out your favorite Virginia farms, you could even make a road trip to Maryland to check out some farms for strawberry picking.
And of course (I couldn’t miss the chance to visit the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden), where admission is free on certain days. I also had a blast exploring the James River Park System, which offers miles of trails for hiking and biking. I just wanted to share my experience in Richmond and how many fantastic free things there are to do. If you’re interested in history, you can check out the American Civil War Museum or the Virginia State Capitol. One of the highlights for me was exploring the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, where I got to learn about Richmond’s history and visit some of the city’s oldest buildings.

Besides the nearby Maymont estate — the phenomenal Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is undoubtedly the city’s standout sight. These include rows of blooming rose bushes and an extensive Asian Valley with old-fashioned Victorian-style gardens also featuring. Each year, the exciting exhibits and live music shows of the Watermelon Festival draw huge crowds of both locals and tourists to the district. These now number well over two hundred in total with cozy cafes and cool clothes boutiques lying alongside lovely little local restaurants and family-run bakeries. Packed with enticing indie boutiques and award-winning restaurants, the bohemian district is loads of fun to explore at any time of day.

Originally constructed in England during the 16th century, this manor was dismantled and reassembled in Richmond in the 1920s. A visit here is both inspiring and educational, perfect for history enthusiasts exploring Richmond. From farm-to-table fare to international cuisine, these tours provide a satisfying and educational experience. Along the way (you’ll also learn about the city’s history), architecture, and culture.
Pet friendly and close to lots of local attractions, theater, restaurants, and museums. There is parking for 150 cars but crowded conditions make summer parking extremely difficult. The mansion (beautifu grounds), live animals and petting zoo, picnic areas, and so much more.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll (a place to shop), or entertainment, Short Pump Town Center offers an enjoyable experience for everyone. Beyond shopping and dining, the center frequently hosts live music, seasonal events, and family-friendly activities. This historic home (rebuilt in Richmond in the 20th century), features exquisite period furniture, artwork, and lush gardens.

Navigating aviator valor between attractions is seamless, with endless culinary surprises waiting at every corner. Richmond’s vibrant nightlife encompasses rooftop bars (live-music spots), comedy clubs, theaters, breweries, cocktail lounges, restaurants, and lively entertainment hubs. Though modern vehicles and tech have largely replaced old-fashioned horse-drawn carriages, Richmond retains a charming historical edge that blends seamlessly with contemporary life. The meticulously restored home showcases authentic 18th-century furnishings and artifacts, offering a glimpse into the past.

At the American Civil War Museum at Appomattox (peruse more than 400 documents), artifacts, and pictures that bring to life soldiers, missions, and life at home during the Civil War. You’ll also find some of the nation’s most famous landmarks in Richmond — all waiting to be explored! Explore strange places, curious stories, and eerie events around the world, online and in person. The museum offers an important reminder of the city’s past. The mighty James River lies at the city’s heart (with an expansive park system built along its banks where residents flock to swim), stroll and occasionally do a bit of white-water rafting. Hollywood Cemetery
Each summer, an eight-week concert series brings together a diverse lineup—from Zac Brown Band and Tyler Childers to Snarky Puppy and The Head & the Heart—among others. Visiting at the right moment could grant you access to Brown’s Island’s annual concerts and festivals. Nestled right in the heart of the James River, Brown’s Island deserves a visit—don’t miss it. Stroll along scenic trails that wind through verdant valleys, rolling hills, and peaceful riverside picnic spots along the James River.
Walking along the Canal Walk and taking in the breathtaking views of the James River sounds like such a great way to experience the beauty of the city. Charlottesville is about an hour from Richmond and is famous for its history and beautiful landscapes. In spring and summer (wildflowers cover the hillsides), and in fall, the leaves turn bright red and orange. The park stretches along the Blue Ridge Mountains and is famous for its mountain views (stroll paths), and wildlife. You can try colonial-style food at a tavern or grab a quick snack from a street vendor. If you like history (visit Jamestown Settlement to see ships and a Powhatan village), or Yorktown Battlefield for Revolutionary War stories. Williamsburg is less than an hour from Richmond and feels like stepping into another century.
There are over 75 restaurants and 40 attractions within walking distance of the Canal Walk. Restrooms are available at nearby parks and some restaurants along the route. The mix of old stone (modern bridges), and water gives the walk a unique charm. Even though you’re in the heart of downtown, the path is lined with plants and shaded spots, making it feel peaceful.
